February 26, 2023 - The Sovereign 2 SilverStar Ski Marathon had a very successful first year with over 500 registrants for its debut. So it’s coming back for an exciting second year including two techniques, over two days, with a choice of two distances running between two world-class cross-country ski venues.
Like last year there will be lots of snow to greet the skiers for the Point to Party event as some of the best skiing on the continent is to be had with the great year-end conditions at Sovereign and SilverStar. This year the organization will be topping the registration at 1,000 entries so they encourage everybody to sign up early.
The S2S was started to provide an anchor cross-country ski event in Western Canada. By having an event late in the ski season it is intended to create an end-of-year goal for many of the local skiers as well as provide a destination event for skiers from all across British Columbia, North America and the rest of the world.
The event plans to continue to grow to allow the opportunity for late-season skiing and to showcase the beauty of the Okanagan Valley and its surroundings to all of the participants.
With the focus on Finishing is Winning, the organizers continue to target skiers who want to challenge themselves to complete either the 21km or 40km distance.
This year’s event will start on Saturday, April 1 with a skate (freestyle) day and end on Sunday, April 2 with a classic day. For those skiers that like to have a bit more of a challenge, there is a discount to do an event on both days.
Starting this year the event is including a Club Championships with the winning club receiving $2,000 in prize money as well as a trophy to proudly display at their home club.
Both venues have a depth of experience putting on events of many sizes, including World Cups, and World Masters Championships plus many local and international events. Over 300 volunteers will be standing by to ensure S2S 2023 will be another success and a highlight for the participants.
SilverStar Mountain has an annual snowfall of approximately 7m and SilverStar Mountain Resort has 12 lifts that span over four mountain faces in addition to the 50+km of cross-country ski trails.
These cross-country trails link to the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club trails to provide 105km of some of the best-groomed trails in the world. Most years the cross country skiing starts in early November. The season continues to early April when the trails close, not because of lack of snow, but because by early April the warmth has started to come to the beautiful Okanagan Valley and everybody is transitioning to their summer sports.
The S2S organizers encourage people to come and do the event and then “Stay and Play!” The event has shifted slightly so that both Sovereign and SilverStar remain open for a further week. This makes it possible to do the event and then stay and enjoy some amazing spring skiing. Or join many of the locals in starting to enjoy the beauty of the City of Vernon, the Okanagan Valley and the rest of beautiful British Columbia.
