October 9, 2020 – Roller skiing is a great way to practice cross-country skiing technique and ready your skiing-specific muscles for the upcoming season. It’s also a lot of fun! If you’re addicted to the glide on skis, you’ll definitely enjoy the movement on roller skis. It’s fast, you’ll see direct results of experimenting with technique, and it’s addictive.

In Nova Scotia, Halifax Nordic Ski Club offers try-it sessions for adults and a six week program for youths, during the fall. Connect with Halifax Nordic if you’re interested in learning more about group instruction and getting started. Programs include club roller skis (skate) to borrow.

No ski club in your area, though still interested in roller ski instruction? There are many resources available to coaches and skiers working to improve skills on their own – such as Nordic Ski Lab (formerly XC Ski Nation), your online nordic ski and roller-ski school.

Provincial Ski Team

Nova Scotia’s provincial cross-country ski team also trains on roller-skis after the snow has melted away. It is the most ski-specific training you can perform and an important part of the program. Our team is dedicated to training year-round.

Keep an eye out for their Second Annual Big Roll event coming up in November. The team invites community members to get roller-skiing alongside the group, or remotely, and contribute to a collective kilometre total. This initiative also raises important funds to off-set competitive expenses.

Cross-country skiing is one of the greatest lifelong outdoor sports. Enjoy this movement throughout the year, by learning to roller-ski. Now more than ever, we must take the time to appreciate being in nature and finding more ways to enjoy the outdoors for physical and mental well-being.
