August 27, 2023 - Cross country skiing today is the result of Tony Wise’s lifetime efforts. Each year CXC recognizes one of the division’s sports leaders for their lifetime commitment to the sport.
Tony Wise was a passionate entrepreneur who dedicated his life to making his community a better place by promoting recreation and sport. Born in Hayward, Wis., Wise brought skiing to the Great Northwoods, pioneering the Telemark Ski Area in 1947. But his most significant acclaim came in cross country skiing. His vision resulted in the start of the American Birkebeiner, the Worldloppet, and the origin of the present-day FIS World Cup with his innovative Gitchi Gami Games in the late ’70s.
The award this year goes to MARY ELORANTA, a hard worker, compassionate, and tremendously motivating individual.
One of Mary’s most renowned accomplishments includes developing the Peak Nordic Program in Waukesha, Wisconsin. From its inception, Mary worked to grow the club into what is now a state powerhouse, producing lifelong skiers and enthusiastic contributors to the sport and community. Peak Nordic is known for its inclusive environment with a place for everyone – beginners, high school skiers, top level competitors, and recreational skiers alike. Mary’s community describes her as a hard worker, compassionate, and tremendously motivating.
Having grown up as a farm girl, Mary’s discipline and drive showed up in her own athletic career: Mary was on the crew team at the University of Wisconsin, where she helped row her team to a National Title!
Congratulations, Mary!
