51st Great Labrador Loppet Sees Success on March 29 Despite Frigid Cold Temperatures

release by the Menihek Nordic Ski Club

April 4, 2026 - We initially organized the 51st Great Labrador Loppet to take place on the trails from Whitewolf and Duley Park for 20km and 10km distances, but Mother Nature interfered with temperatures of up to -50 degrees C, that resulted in the event’s cancelation, which affected all of the venues.

We reorganized the loppet to run the next day on Sunday, March 29 at our own Menihek Nordic Ski Club venue and used our chalet and xc ski trails. We had 81 skiers register for the 3.3km, 5km, 10km and 20 km events. Although the weather wasn’t much warmer, it seems everyone enjoyed the day on our trails.

Doug Yetman did great job with the timing and results, and Alfred Parsons did a fabulous job of grooming and received lots of compliments.

Tony Lawrence and his group had no problem moving to Rideout’s Run Cabin for the feed station. Ross O’Keefe and Erin looked after the feed station by the lodge and did a nice job as well. Craig Porter ensured safety all around representing Labrador West Ground Search & Rescue.

Beatrice and her team did a great job preparing and setting up the food at the chalet, while Rhonda organized the kids awards, presentations and prizes – a good job all round.

Melisa and Courtney handled all of the decorating and set-up at the lodge for the adult presentations and awards, and looked after the events executing a really nice job. Tim Winsor took over as chief Chef for the BBQ and it was delicious.

Highlights included Glenn Bond as the overall 20km winner, and Chalotte Winsor topping the women’s field. And for first time ever, Adelyn Winsor and Kathryn Kennedy completed 20 km in the under 12-years category.

Thank you as well to Cythia Lambert for being Race secretary. The winners of the draw for the PAL Airline tickets were Derrick Daniels and Josephine Gaulton Rowe.

In addition, we’d like to thank the Organizing Committee, and especially the sponsors and supporting groups – it was a very successful day all around.
